As a small boy, Tshipo

things. This habit got him into serious trouble when he pulled a

fun when he picked up money and his brother took him to an amusement park
where he could pull the levers of the amusement boxes.

Pampas was twelve years
old. He did not go to school, because he had to take care o f
his grandpa who was blind. He loved his grandpa very much,
especially on pension day when Grandpa used to buy him sweets and also
when grandpa was telling him his stories. He told Pampas about Marimba,
the mother of music. One-day thieves robbed grandpa and he died.
What was Pampas going to do now? His aunt had a good plan. She
taught him to read and write. He learned how to make a car out of
wood, and also a Mukimbe, a type of xylophone. His nephew Dintwe was
very jealous of him and gave him a lot of trouble, but Pampas was too
clever for him. Pampas worked out a new life for him, a life where he
could earn something. He became a street musician. He
and his mukimbe became famous. He lived with his mother and had a
good relationship with her. His father was a stranger to him,
but he came for grandpa’s funeral. And then there was Pule,
the beautiful girl who stayed with her aunt and came to visit…

Mengelmoes/Thukulatshe is a book with short stories. The background
of the stories is mostly the rural areas. We find some interesting
characters: Where did Kgopiso go to at night when everybody was asl eep?
He followed his father and discovered something wonderful.When Keabetswe's
father had too much to drink, he easily took off his police belt to hit
the children. What could Keabetswe do when she was afraid of him?
Sekola got very angry when the donkey gave him trouble, but it was this
same donkey that helped him a lot when his grand nephew from the city
visited him - the nephew who owned his own cell phone. Thabiso made a lot
of plans to buy a bicycle. And then came the fire and suddenly it
seemed as if nothing was going to happen with his plans. Lehlohonolo had a
food stall at the taxi rank for one day. He learned that you had to think
very carefully before you accused someone. Palesa learned at the school
how to make a vegetable garden. And why did Lerato had a fright when she
brought her picture to teacher Nthateng? |
